Come on in, one and all! The hearth is hot, the Sleeping Shamrock is bustling with warmth and life. The air's thick with all sorts of smells, hot soups and fresh pastries and various potent potables ranging from winter wine to batarian shardwine, ryncol to grog, T'Keela to tequila, high-grade to sake to berduskan ale to mead to...

Well, it's the Sleeping Shamrock, name your drink of choice and Linah will be able to find it somewhere behind her counter, no matter who you are, where you're from, or what you want. Sometimes the Illogical Field decides to be helpful, not often, but those times do exist.

Find yourself a seat, too, by the fire for warmth, or by a window if you prefer it cooler or with a view of the outside world, rain lashing the glass in stark contrast to the coziness within.

"Alright everyone!" Linah calls out, clapping her hands to get the room's attention. Things fall quiet as people look her way. "There's a little tradition from my world we like to call the pub quiz, and I'm bringin' it here! Here's how it works. Solo or team doesn't matter, really. I give you questions, you write down answers and give them to me. Correct answers get prizes. Sounds simple, right?"

She grins at the gathered crowd, and she and her daughter -- Zhi, nearly thirteen -- start passing out writing implements and scrap paper, of which there are plenty if anyone needs more later.

Hello and welcome!

No, this is not actually an IC thread, despite the intro. XD I was just trying to make it interesting. No, no, you won't be replying here, see below.

Every so often I will put a new question or question-like thing (name XX of YY...) at the bottom of this post, along with possible prizes.

You will PM the answers to me, Heron, @Belial.

Prizes are awarded, much like the Enigma, at update. I change the quiz, and a reply post comes up under this one with the last question, the relevant answers, and winning participants (with won prizes in a spoiler tag).

Mostly prizes will number among BP and shop coins, but every now and again...well. You know me. I hate being boring and sticking to the basics.

If you're wondering why this when also Enigma, however, it's because the Enigma is a very broad challenge. Kay asks all sorts of interesting things about all sorts of things, ranging from why there are twelve months to the origins of Halloween to the symbolism of the Olympic flag. For two questions, the Enigma was site-focused, and that was where this was born. The Shamrock Pub Quiz is only going to be asking you things that are Sunder-specific, so be prepared to answer questions about characters, shinies, site lore, and other things unique to our carefully-constructed little world. ^^

It's a Kind of Magic, Part II

The inaugural Pub Quiz quiz! For the first ever quiz question, I'm going to ask you something complicated, but I'm confident you can do it anyway.

Faith and religion are difficult topics to tackle on the best of days, true, but they exist, and to some extent this reality extends to our fiction. Our characters have faith, religion. Sometimes as a reflection of their players' faiths, sometimes in opposition to.

Name me not only five characters on site who HAVE stated religions, name me their gods and a few basic details, be that belief or custom, something that describes that faith and its followers.

EXAMPLE: Because I can't participate anyway and his faith is a bit obscure, let's take Khareesh. His faith is not an organized religion, but a tribal belief in a totemic spirit, the Dune Eagle, who is a bringer of visions to Her tribe and an emblem of fierce freedom. While their lack of organized religion makes followers of the Dune Eagle somewhat lacking in structured beliefs, they tend toward matriarchy (their totem is female) and only following authorities they respect and trust, rebelling easily against would-be superiors that fail to inspire confidence.

Character name, deity name, brief blurb, x5

A shop coin per answer, getting all five filled out nets you a surprise bonus. ;)

ANSWER(S): Let's have a look at a few site characters, shall we? We'll start with mine since they're easy and work outward from there.

Belial serves no god but he serves ORDER. He is LAW. And in this he is a servant of the cosmic Balance, the necessary countermeasure to Chaos. And nobody was getting this one, but he did qualify as a potential answer, however obscure. Is it stated? Several times, actually, though not in any great depth and probably not even mostly on THIS particular site. Belial's statement of faith is more of a collection of gold flakes in the pan than any substantial nuggets, so while he was on offer as an answer, I'd have probably had a heart attack had his name actually come in on anyone's form.

Shrayla worships the goddess Selune, who is, in Shrayla's home world, the goddess of the moon, of travel and travelers, of non-evil lycanthropes, also of all-inclusive acceptance (only evil actions make evil, one should not be judged by one's birth). The moon-and-stars symbol of Selune is Shrayla's tether to sanity and, she hopes, her beacon to redemption. This is stated in her profile and several RP threads, likely more to come as well.

Jacien was probably one of the easiest answers on site, being as he's a priest, and all, of the goddess Myune the Gravewatcher, whose purpose it is to protect the sanctity of the tomb and prevent acts of grave desecration. This includes simple theft and vandalism, too, but they're more often called upon to fight their holy war against malevolent necromancers who raise the dead in some truly creative ways. Unlike Belial, whose sitewide statement of faith is extremely vague, abstract, and largely intuited...Jacien's is inescapable, clearly labeled, covered in bright warning stickers, has a library of attached instruction manuals, and never fails to come up in conversation.

Linah also used to be a clerical sort, though of Aphrodite instead of the fantastical gods of D&D lands. Hellenic (or Greek if you prefer, but Linah considers that a racial slur) goddess of love, beauty, sexuality, carnal gratification...a long list of things that aren't site-friendly... She began life as a prostitute for her temple, as was the function of her religion back in her day. Since nobody's really asked her about this in RP, you'd have to read her profile (or have chatted with me on the topic personally XD) to have had it be "stated".

Raferties and Keldos count as a singular entry because they originate from the same deity, that being Solaris, who is a creator-god as well as a sun god and a god of good and justice and truth, this manifests in Solaris' angels being generally unable and unwilling to lie and you may have noticed these two in particular are truthy as all get-out. Their connection to the Chorus (Solaris' angelic collective) and to Solaris Himself is labeled all over the place, so they're theoretically a fairly simple answer. Unless you trip over the 2 = 1 math, anyway because to be fair I forgot to label same deity/same entry.

Cain is listed as a servant of Death, theoretically to make sure what's supposed to be dead gets there and stays there. Also what isn't supposed to die yet doesn't. There's a schedule to things, see. It doesn't really read much like a religion, but it is a faith, in its way. Cain wouldn't be serving Death if there wasn't a point there to believe in, after all, even if the relationship seems more employer/employee.

Tidesweep, yes, Tide, have you noticed her swearing by the Universe? Universal Law, predestination, the higher power that has already organized everything ahead of time it's all scripted already it's all good. Or, if it's not good, you go out there and you try to kick it in the shins instead of whining about it. Not that you'll necessarily succeed at changing the script, but you can sure try. Universal Law does come with Free Will subclauses -- ask Belial, he'll tell you exactly how many and list them off for you if you have a week to spare for his incessant droning.

Moro Skyshroud has at least a passing faith in the Nine Divines of her home, and yes, all Nine, though her strongest faith is in Akatosh, Kynareth, and Talos in particular, the gods of time, nature, and the Nords of Skyrim. But Moro...she's a little more complicated than that, you know, she's also got some faith in the Daedric Princes -- the demon-gods of her world, if you will -- that meddle with her world. Not all of them, mind you, Moro isn't quite so reckless or destructive as to place faith in the truly awful ones, but Hircine and Meridia, the Prince of the Hunt and the Lady of Infinite Energies, gods of hunting and the lifeforce...they've got Moro's attention.

Legion is perhaps not as faithful as all Cybertronians, but then he doesn't have to be. Cybertron itself as a planet is more or less the living body of Primus, the effective creator-god of Transformer-kind. A living body that occasionally dies, as evidenced by the civil war that generated the Autobot and Decepticon factions, but body nonetheless. Legion, confronted with the incontrovertible proof that his people's gods are REAL, doesn't have to choose between belief and atheism the same way most people do. He has respect for Primus and for Unicron the Unmaker, and let's leave it at that.

Telmaril Frostfall has a lot of gods he could choose from. Eorzea has The Twelve, and Tel's god in particular is Oschon the Wanderer, for whom he has some fondness. Although if you really delve into Tel's idea of FAITH, you're more likely to find traces of actual worship in the Elementals, the lords and ladies of the elements, who grant the white mages (and black mages) their power.

Detsuru Ashyana follows the goddess of her people (the Salu'ani), Cerene. Cerene is a goddess of the moon, whose husband is the earth. The afterlife of Cerene's believers is the eternal forest paradise of Ashyn'lnar, a place of peace and rest. As the Salu'ani are capable of choosing the moments of their deaths -- in fact willing themselves to die -- this death is not the mournful event the rest of us might be used to, but a celebration, of sorts, that the deceased has literally gone to a better place.

There are probably more but I think that's also probably enough. ^^

PRIZES: Will be spoilertagged for the illusion of privacy!

QUESTION: What is the tattoo around junior weyrwoman/Weyrlingmaster Jahena's left wrist and why is it significant?

I've got a Mushroom off of Kalatis' shelves for anyone who read that far. Red or Blue is your pick if you get it right. ^^

Why a pricey item like that for a simple question? Well, it's pretty simple. Kalatis complained to me that her mushroom supply was about to go bad and she has to refresh her inventory, so... better use these puppies up before they go!

ANSWER: Around Jahena's left wrist is the tattoo of the Pit Vipers, the mercenary company Jahena was born into and indeed took over before she was Searched for the Weyr.

PRIZES: Tidfe, Kay, AND RETSOM I'M SORRY I FORGOT TO ADD YOUR NAME y'all both get to take this Mushroom Token to Kalatis and tell her Heron sent you. S'good for one mushroom, so tell her if you want a red one or a blue one when you get there.

As an aside, Retsom, have +15 Shop Coins because I'm an idiot.

One of the most influential golden queens to never get a speaking voice, most here remember when Tazareth went between. Now let's see what else y'all remember...and researched around. ^^ For a Runic Gizzard Stone, Small, tell me a bit about what you know.

QUESTION: Who Impressed golden Tazareth, and how old was she at the time? For bonus points, and another Runic Gizzard Stone (one of the standard dragon ones, not Song, Prismatic, or Sunwyrm), tell me more about the rider's particulars.

Also, +5 shop coins to Tide and Owl for running into a grammatical error on my part, sorry. ^^;

ANSWER: Abigail Offob was Tazareth's rider, and Impressed at 16. Though the way I originally phrased it I could have also been asking for 42, the age Abigail died. This particularly eccentric junior weyrwoman was a powerful psychic whose visions were never wrong, and she left her various continuing shinies to our active playerbase a long while back. Her death was a death-with-dignity suicide ride between with her dragon, as Abigail's body was losing the fight with fully involved cancer and every dragon and rider would prefer to die together.

While I've slipped her history in places like Last Will and Testament and a few of the descriptions in the Exchange, the real gem is the community participation. Thank you for bringing her to life, Tidesweep!

PRIZES: That's 10BP to Owl and Tide for correct answers, and you each get a Small Runic Gizzard Stone Token to turn in to Kalatis at the shop!

QUESTION: For a Cursed Idol off of Kalatis' shelves, name me the inventor that brought us our clockwork cuddlebugs!

ANSWER: The inventor of the clockwork cuddlebugs (the Athid, if you weren't sure of the species) was a watch maker by name of Astrid. Lonely, reclusive woman, Astrid. Of course, she fixed that loneliness right handily and filled our Database and our hearts with the cutest ticking not-so-creepy crawlies ever.

PRIZES: Here is where it gets fun. A Cursed Idol to Tide and Owl for giving me the correct answer!

Also, Tide, have a free Star Token, good for any one-star shiny in our Database! Why? Because you went a step further and gave me the Athid's OTHER inventor as well. Incidentally, that was Owl, the creator who put the Athid in the Database to begin with.

QUESTION: So, site lore, shinies, let's talk characters. For a three star token (good for any combination of three stars' worth of shinies from the Database), we have a relatively recent arrival, a junior queenrider come quite suddenly in our midst. She's small, she's quiet, but she's by no means insignificant, and she rides silver true. Who is she?

ANSWER: The answer to this one, ladies and gents, was Gertude Weavian, rider of silver Rissinoth, played by Tide!

Although I also accepted the common misspelling of Gertrude, as both Autocorrect and sheer instinct are quick to put that second R in the name.

PRIZES: Kay, Owl, Tide, you all get a three star token to cash in for any combination of three stars you so desire from the Database. Show it to Aeon at the Veiled Shrine, tell him Heron sent you. He's good for it.

QUESTION: So, our shiny species have their own unique cultures and traditions. Customs, practices, some have entire religions, others have armies. One species in particular has a peculiar declaration of alliance.

For a Bone Talisman, which is the species that declares friendship by the gift of a necklace charm crafted from a shed tooth?

ANSWER: For this one, Heron sent you to the Database! To a species Heron wrote up, no less, for those who combed through enough lore to come up with the Zaithandi. Part great hunting cat, part shark, their teeth are razor-sharp and detach fairly easily, as they regrow quickly, which makes them easily accessible as personal talismans.

PRIZES: Owl, Tide, Kay -- My regulars! A Bone Talisman for each of you. See you again next round!

QUESTION: Kalatis has been on me, you know, handing her stock out so freely without at least advertising her shop in the process. Apparently, she's annoyed. ^.^;

On that note, let's take a look at her inventory for this one. What item comes in two sizes, only applies to about half of either of the two species to which it applies, and for the most part comes cheaply, as it offers a change without causing an actual mutation?

Hint -- Correct answers will net you one of each item!

ANSWER: The species-specific items in Kalatis' inventory are the Runic Gizzard Stones, which come in two sizes. Large, for mottle dragons, and small, for mottle firelizards. The ones for dragons are (mostly) extremely cheap, because they don't really induce a mutation so much as they just shift a natural ability from something that's there to something else that's already there.

As for "half of the species", well, the pure Pernese dragons and flits remain impervious to tampering and are immune to the gizzard stones. These items alter only mottles who have wild dragon heritage, so...about half of each species.

QUESTION: For +15 shop coins, we're going back to the Database! So, we know many species of shiny can not or do not talk, some species struggle with choppy grammar, some mindspeak fluently...

What species can actually speak aloud, albeit only in a single unique (to each rank) language?

ANSWER: And nobody actually got this one to me, although Tide is getting 5 shop coins for a near miss, the answer is Illaro.

Our beloved elf-wolves don't just mindspeak, each rank is based on an elven subspecies, and can speak that elven dialect aloud. It's highly specific to them, and to them alone.

However, Tide, the Grathkin do have a rank-by-rank speech style convention that muddied the waters, so you're not walking away empty-handed.

QUESTION: If I only had a heart~ Sunder sees some odd characters around. Player characters, NPCs. Most are alive, but some...

So here's the ticket. You name me five player characters or site NPCs with zero heartbeat, you win! Oh, wait, win what, you ask?

+15 Shop Coins, that's what!

ANSWER(S): This one seemed hard, didn't it? How were you supposed to find FIVE animate characters with NO HEARTBEAT?! But then y'all started thinking about it and it started getting easier. We have characters and NPCs that number among the undead and we have them who number among the mechanically constructed, we even have one character who is a magic talking sword. Two if you count one of Shrayla's shinies. It's a question that gets easier the more you pick over it.

Notable Acceptable Responses

Autobot Legion
Cobalt
Caliburn Pen
Maurice
Cain Skelington
Any and all Athid
Dust-7
Crow, Dust's Ghost
Autobot Banner (retired but not forgotten)
Aeon, technically
Mute
Kyri'lyn (also retired, also not forgotten)
EVERGLEEM, aforementioned talking sword Dream Cloud I didn't expect anyone to know about but was still a valid answer

PRIZES: My only three takers this round were my regulars! Kay, Owl, Tide, you each get your full prizes, but hold on, some of you gave me too many answers! XD

Owl +15 shop coins
Kay +21 shop coins
Tide +21 shop coins

AND a bonus bottle of Aeon's Kiss for each of you! Gift of gab for one shiny apiece. ^^

It's A Kind Of Magic!

The fade is an experiment going forward! And we're talking mutations this time, particularly the ones players can themselves add to their own shinies. For the prize of one, what is the item that can give a shiny magic powers?

Answer: The item in Kalatis' inventory that is both the answer to this question and the prize for this round is the Arcane Script! Kudos to Kay, Owl, and Tide for mailing me the answer to that one! One for each of you, and good job on keeping up with your site know-how!

QUESTION:

It's a given that Dream Cloud Creatures are pretty cool. It's also a known fact that they're extremely expensive. This week, I'm sending you on a Database bounty hunt!

+15 Shop Coins for every equine (horse-like) shiny species you can name off to me! Some of them may be unconventional or surprising! Some may only be partially equine or only equine some of the time.

No, not a trick, really that simple. I want everyone familiar with the Database and with enough coins in-pocket to buy what you want from Kalatis. This includes a DCC and a mutation or two. ^^

This one was a bit of a scavenger hunt, no? Lemme break the answers into three categories for you.

The Easy Ones: Firemanes, Starmanes, Pegasi, Unicorns

Slightly More Challenging: Hippogryphs, Caradras, Hippocampi

The Contextual Ones: Familiars, Sumines, Dream Cloud Creatures

And more to come, I'm sure, but for the moment, that's that. 10 answers, this was worth 150 coins.

My winners!

Tide (150 Shop Coins and a Red Mushroom for the bonus response)

Kay (135 Shop Coins)

Fenris (125 Shop Coins)

Good job, everyone!

Okay, another seemingly simple task that's gonna make you dig. For every two (2) names you bring to me, I'll give you a star token.

QUESTION: How many characters do we have with no real mother or father because they were built instead of born? Talk to each other and puzzle that out, because there are some organics that qualify too. See you next week!

ANSWERS:

Characters, retired characters, NPCs, even shinies! Anyone and anything without a proper mother/father! At least in this lifetime.

-Linah
-Necthain
-Korazjh'Ikth

QUESTION: So, we've all seen that event I've got up and running. HEIST! Welcome to the Desmonian Institute of Arts and Sciences. Anyone not in that yet is encouraged to join, by the by. /shameless plug.

So tell me, for the prize of a UNIQUE MAGIC OR CURSED CUSTOM ARTIFACT FOR ANY ONE OF YOUR CHARACTERS (PM me the gist of what you want and we'll have some fun ^^)...

For whom was the Desmonian Institute named and where is the namesake now?

ANSWER: The Desmonian Institute is named for Weyrwoman Desmona, now Elder Councilwoman Desmona. She's one of the three members of the Elder Council of retired Weyrwomen who assist in command decisions that are too large for Sandasa's authority alone.

During her day as Weyrwoman, long, long ago, she was very involved in leaving a legacy dedicated to education and the preservation of history, the continuity of culture by study and understanding, and so it was that the then-grateful Haven Village formed and named the Desmonian Institute in her honor. She worked hard to make sure history was never forgotten.

PRIZES: Kay, Owl, Tide, my regulars! One magic item for the each of you! Items will end up in your inboxes when they're completed with titles, fades, and full descriptions.
